The mystery is full of twists and turns, so it kept me guessing till the end and the r

The Island of Dreams by Helen McGinn

Martha is the youngest daughter, coming home for her sister's wedding. She doesn't like her fiance one bit but decides not to say anything. Then he hits on her and tries to convince her sister that it was all her. The wedding gets canceled and they turn it into a big party instead. Her sister convinces her to go on what was supposed to be her honeymoon alone, as a chance to do something new and get out of the rut she has been in ever since she canceled her wedding years before. The trip doesn't start all that well at first, but soon the Greek island starts to work its magic on her, and she falls for it and the single father living there. The life there is much different from what she has been living and the change doesn't feel so bad at all. She has her freedom, has fun, and learns to enjoy her life again. It's a lovely story of getting a fresh start and learning to live again. I liked the story, but for some reason couldn't get into it. ❤ ❤ ❤ book info Publishe

The Fallback by Eleanor Goyner

They have been best friends since college. She came to town to work in the lab and she needed a place to stay. He needed a roommate fast. The first time they met, they instantly clicked together and have been best friends and secretly in love with each other since then. He has a very unrealistic view of dating and is always with someone, but it never works out. She gave up on dating altogether. Then he comes up with a crazy idea. They both have to make an effort to date and if they don't find anyone by the time of the Christmas office party, they will get a family together. The change shakes up their relationship at its core. The more they look around the more obvious it becomes that what they are looking at is at their noses. But the path from best friends to HEA is anything but straightforward. I liked the characters, the storyline (it's one of my favorite tropes), and the ending... but I had the hardest time connecting to the writing. ❤ ❤ ❤ book info Published April 11, 2024

Books of January [2024]

Image
The start of the year is such an exciting time. All of the magic of the holiday time dies down, and there is a place to take a breath of fresh air, slow down, and rethink goals, and wants for the new year. I've been doing a lot of thinking this month about what I want for the future and looking back to see where I came from. How do you feel about the new year? In January I read 8 books. The year started out strong with The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. I'm probably the last person to read this, but who cares. :) It's so different from the book I usually like. It has this moody dark academic atmosphere, that I got totally hooked on. I don't think I've ever read anything like it. The storyline is hidden behind the dialog and character building and it's just so good. I left the book with more unanswered questions than I started it with, so I'm looking forward to reading the next one. :) I've read three romance books. The Neighbor Wager by Crystal Kaswell, an e

Werecats Emergent by Mark J. Engels

Pawly is just a normal teenager, thinking about going to college and playing ice hockey, until one night, when her brother is in trouble, she transforms into something totally different. She discovered that she inherited a family curse. Under duress, she transforms into a werecat.   The story is told from two POVs,  Pawly, as she discovers her powers and deals with everything that comes with them, good and bad, and Ritzy, her uncle, whose story reads more like a thriller. The world created as a whole is well-developed and full of details, that make it more real as you read the story. There are historical tidbits about the werecats interwoven that make the story come alive. The setting just jumps from the pages, and the whole Werecats lore is very well written and established. There are betrayals, family drama, tension at every turn and enough action to keep you glued to the pages. I really liked the story, but it's a very complex one, so I was often confused about what was going on

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake

I went into the story not knowing anything about it and got instantly hooked. It's so dark and moody and so addicting! :) It's set in a world full of magic. Some have a lot, some a little and some none at all. Six of the most talented people are recruited for a unique position every decade, and only five will make it through the first year. The Alexandrian society guards the lost knowledge, that is not for all to see. The five who make it through will be the guardians of the knowledge. They will have a life of success, wealth and power. Libby and Nico can control the world around them. They fit together, even though they want nothing to do with each other, Reina is a naturalist, the nature around her talks to her, but she doesn't like her power that much. Parisa can read everyone's mind and can travel to the unconscious mind to unravel what is hidden behind each and every one. Tristan can see through every illusion and Callum, an empath who can make anyone do whatever t

The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan

I never expected that there would be another book in the original Percy Jackson series. I was looking forward to reading it and it certainly didn't disappoint. Percy is almost done with high school, but before he can enter college, he needs three recommendation letters from Gods. And the only way to get that is to do random quests for whichever God needs something. First, he has to help Ganymede, who lost his golden goblet. He needs to find it before it gets into the wrong hands because it can turn any mortal into a god.  Nothing is ever easy or straightforward in Percy's world. He, Annabeth and Grover are back together and it's the best thing! :) It has all of the elements that made the Percy Jackson series so good, friendship, adventure and awesome mythology. The only thing that it hits differently is that the stakes are a lot lower...  ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ book info published September 26, 2023 number of pages 268 GoodReads Amazon happy reading, anie

Heaven Official's Blessing, Vol. 1 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

Image
One of the most romantic stories I've read in a long time. It's a super slow burn and super romantic.  Xie Lian has ascended to godhood three times, angering a lot of gods in the process. Now he has a lot of debts to pay and no money to do so. in the 800 years since he was a beloved crown prince, people forgot about him and there are no temples dedicated to him anymore. He is sent to the mortal realm to hunt down the violent ghosts that are causing trouble and earn enough to pay off all that he is owed. He meets a mysterious stranger along the way, who is clearly a lot more than he pretends to be. They have an instant connection... :) The fantasy world created is detailed and well-written writer and the romance is just the sweetest. The show is very similar and I can't decide which one I like better. :) I highly recommend it! book info published December 14, 2021 number of pages 432 GoodReads Amazon happy reading, anie

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling

This was the book that started it all for me. I remember getting it and reading it for the first time. There is nothing quite like the feeling of diving into a new magical world and getting lost in the book. 11 years ago a child was born to a witch and a wizard. One year later evil wizard tried to kill him, but he couldn't. He disappeared, and his parents died protecting him. He was left with his aunt and uncle to be raised alongside his cousin. It wasn't a happy childhood. He was neglected and punched to the side until 10 years later letters started to arrive. They never let him read it, going to the extreme to prevent him from getting one. Until the evening of his 11 birthday. They were hiding in an abandoned cabin in the middle of the lake when there was a knock on the doors that would change his life forever. Hagrid delivers his letter and tells him who he really is. He took him shopping the next day and one month later he was on the train to Hogwarts. His life at school wa

Remember Pompeii by Kika Emers

Kali is a teenager, with an immortal soul. She is being punished for something that happened in Pompeii to live as a mortal girl along with her family. If she manages not to use her powers by the time she reaches 17 years, she and her family will go back to being immortal beings.  She hasn't managed to come to that age in 200 lifetimes, but what no one else knows, is that that is on purpose. She doesn't want to lose what she has and doesn't want anything to change.  This is the lifetime when it all changes. She is being blackmailed and is left with little to no choice. I like the premise of the story, but I had time to get into it. Kali is a very hard person to like and root for. ☆☆ ☆ book info published April 30, 2024 series The Wanshiqi Trilogy #1 GoodReads Amazon happy reading, anie
