Open Minds by Susan Kaye Quinn

Title: Open Minds
Series: Mindjack Series #1
Published: October 2011
Number of pages: 338
Goodreads link: Open Minds
Genre: ya, paranormal, dystopia, science fiction, fiction, fantasy

Well, this was definitely a roller coaster. At the beginning I though, that this is going to be one of those book where special girl falls in love with biggest idiot in the book and does stupid this because... love I guess. I could not be more wrong. I mean I was so surprised, when I saw that the book was only 338 pages long, it felt like it was at least 500. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't because it was boring or it dragged on or anything like that, because it definitely didn't and wasn't. It was just so action packed, so much happened, so many different scenes... just amazing how that much story can be packed on so little pages.

I love the evolution of the story. It start with teenage girl, that is different than everyone else, in future earth, where most of the people evolved to be mind reader. She can't read minds, so keeps to her self, until she find out she can do something even more amazing. I don't want to spoil anything but it goes from high school story, to exposing government evil doing in 300 pages. OMG. She grows a lot during the story, from shy to totally bad ass girl. :)

I love, because I didn't see any of the thing coming. Most of the times, it is pretty obvious where the story is heading, but OMG this was full of surprises.

Definitely one of the best mind reading books I have ever read.

Highly recommend it!

Happy reading!

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Rating:  💚 💚 💚 💚 💚
Author: Christopher Paolini
Title: Eragon
Series: The Inheritance Cycle #1
Number of pages: 503
Published: June 2002
Goodreads link: Eragon
Genre: fantasy, fiction, ya, adventure, dragons, magic

I can't believe I haven't review this one yet. It is one of my all time favourites. It takes place in beautiful, but harsh world, full of magical creatures and all sorts of magic.

It is high fantasy adventure book, that has stuck with me since I first read it. We follow the journey of Eragon, regular boy, living with his uncle and cousin, working on fields and hunting. He is quite average, until he stumbles on an egg one day. He takes care of it, until the dragon hatch. It turns out he is the last dragon rider in this world and he is the only one able to save nation against evil.

The part for me is the magical system in it. It is elaborate and well done. It features a lot of different magical creatures and different kind of magic: elves (yeeey :D), dwarfs, healers, dragons (it's so hard to find a good fantasy featuring dragons), dragon riders and that is not even all.

We can see him grow from boy, to a fierce warrior. I love his transformation and also his relationship with Saphira.

I have to say, it start a bit slow at start, like first 50 pages, but it picks up quicly after that. Also cover is so beautiful. :)

Amazing book and must read for all fantasy lovers for sure.

Happy reading!

Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder

Rating: 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚
Author: Maria V. Snyder
Title: Touch of Power
Series: Healer #1
Number of pages: 390
Published: December 2011
Goodreads link: Touch of Power
Genre: high fantasy, magic, ya, fantasy, fiction,

I seriously love every book I have ever read from this author. Poison study is one of my all time favourite books and Touch of Power is not far behind.

It is high fantasy novel, about a world where healers are hunted and killed, because they are held responsible, because people believe they started the plague, that ripped that place apart.

Avry is hiding away, from town to town, trying to stay alive, but she can't help herself when someone needs her, she heals. That how she is captured, sentenced to die. She is saved by Kerrick and his friends, because he need her to heal someone. That's where things get complicated. She refuses to heal that guy, and Kerrick is trying to convince/force her other way.

I love character of Avry, she is strong, smart enough to stay alive so long and hold her own. I also love the relationships that form on this journey. I also love the magic in the story, the whole magical system.

One thing I don't like- the cover.

Really amazing book that I highly recommend.

Happy reading!

The Soulkeepers by G. P. Ching

Rating: 💚 💚 💚 💚
Author: G. P. Ching
Title: The Soulkeepers
Series: The Soulkeepers #1
Number of pages: 308
Published: June 2011
Genre: fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, angels, romance, mystery, ya
Goodreads link: The Soulkeepers

Reading this book, was a bit of a roller coaster for me. I loved it at times and was also a bit lost and bored at times. But in the end it turned out it was quite good. I'm a bit inpatient when I'm really into story, so the pace was slow at certain parts of the book, but it was necessary, I suppose. The bad stuff is also good in a way- the was time to develop characters and to build relationships, to discover the world.

I really like the character of Jacob. He is strong, stubborn and has a bit of a attitude- love that. I also the mythology. It is so well thought out and written, it feels real. It was certainly different take on angels. :) Also, I love that the book was diverse, and most importantly. diversity was done well. The end left me with a lot of unanswered questions, wanting the next book right away.

All in all, good book.

Happy reading!

Title: Give Up the Ghost
Series: Standalone
Number of pages: 241
Published: September 2009
Genre: paranormal, young adult, fantasy, romance, supernatural, urban fantasy
Goodreads link: Give Up the Ghost

Really interesting read. I love that it deal with really important issues in the right way. Story is really interesting and also different, as I am use to.

We follow Cass, that started seeing ghosts after her sister died. Because she was heavily bullies in junior high, she doesn't trust easily and prefers to talk to her ghost friends over real people. She uses her ghosts friends to spy on people and find out their secrets. She uses them to her advantage, when time is right. She is determent to find something on Danielle, her former best friend and the girl who started bulling her

Everything changes when Tim, VP of student council asks her for help.

I really like the story, but the ending left me with so many questions. What happens after? Do they get together? Why does she has her powers? Is she suppose to help ghost to go? Does Paige eventually disappears? Is he OK? I want to know more about Cass and ghosts and I would love it, if there was sequel. Maybe that is a part what makes this book so special.

Received it free from Megan Crewe newsletter.

The Glass Arrow by Kristen Simmons

💚 💚 💚 💚 💚
Author: Kristen Simmons
Title: The Glass Arrow
Series: Standalone (😲)
Number of pages: 343
Published: February 2015
Genre: dystopia, young adult, science fiction, fantasy, fiction
Goodreads link: The Glass Arrow

In short: it is dystopia, put in futute, where after the great war woman are left without rights, sold and traded like merchandise. The story follows Aya, who lives in mountain free, but is eventually captured and put in one of the homes, that prep girls, before the are sold to men. She never stops fighting, trying to escape always. never gives up. We follow her journey to freedom

I love that she is smart about it, she think beforehand and she is prepared. Also, she doesn't have special powers, she doesn't save the world, just her little part of it. and most importantly no insta-love and no love triangle. It is one of the most unique stories. I love that it is stand alone, but at the same time I would love to read more about that world and what happens after.

One of my favourite dystopia stories, because it doesn't have any of the things I usually love, but it is still (or despite of it) one of the most unique, interesting, captivation and just all around amazing books.

Happy reading!

The Institute by Kayla Howarth

💚 💚 💚 💚

Author: Kayla Howarth

Title: The Institute

Series: The Institute #1

Number of pages: 280

Published: January 2015

Goodreads link: The institute

Well, is one of those book that surprise you. I went into this with low expectations, I was rolling my eyes first few chapters, thinking it is going to be one of those insta-love-the-biggest-idiot-in-the-book kind of story. But it is not. It is actually quite amazingly written, towards the end I could not tear my eyes from the page.

It is dystopian story of the world after. There was some kind of disease that wipe out a lot humanity, after that countries set up ban on travelling outside of their own country. The island country, where the story take place, invented the vaccine that cure that. In fear of another epidemic, ban is still up. Strange thing started to happen after that, some people got special powers. Some could not control them and accidents happen. Now these people, defective, are hunted and put in the institute, where the are helped. At least that is the official line. In reality the are tortured and used.

I love the setting and the world. It has strong "that could really happen" vibe. It is so realistically, that it is a bit scary at times.

The story has so many twists and turns it is hard to keep up at times. Nothing is what it seems.

Now to relationships. I find the father a bit repressing and overbearing. I mean I get that he wants to protect his son, but still. It is a bit much. And her bong with her brother, I don't now it doesn't fell like they are that close as she say they are.

On the other hand, friendships in this story are very well done. I love her bond with Tate and Chad (hope they will be more).

I love that she is strong character, even though I wanted her to fight more at times.

And the ending... it was so amazing. It left with more questions, then it answers. What is actually going on? I need to read the second one right away. :)

Happy reading!

#5 hottest guys in YA books

It's been a while since I have done #5 favourites. Today I am doing one that I'm really excited about. Even though I don't usually like to read romance novels, I do like if there a bit of romance in fantasy or fiction books. These are my 5 favourite guys in books.

1. Edward

The ultimate hot guy and my first book crush :). He is really modern day vampire Mr. Darcy. I love that he is protective, strong and practically invisible. Mind reading and sparkling is cool too. :) He is also really close to his family. Even though he has few faults, he is still amazing.

2. Nicolas

OMG this guy is so cool. He is sooo bad-ass. Nicolas is immortal Mohiri worrier. He is kind of half demon, who spends his day hunting and killing vampires. He is really strong willed and charismatic. And I love the relationship they have with Sara (always butting heads)

3. Wolf

He is my favourite male character in Lunar chronicles. He is strong and loyal, always thinking of Scarlet. He has a hard life growing up (all the surgeries and all that crap). Still despite all that, he is kind of sweet and really bad-ass.

4. Tristan

Ahh. He kind of grows on you. In the beginning of the book he is a jerk and totally unlikable, but there is a reason for it. Later when you get to know him better, you can really appreciate how smart and resourceful he is. Putting his own life on the line to protect those who need help. Sacrificing himself so she can live. Just amazing. He is really handsome and also a TROLL :). Love his character.

Stolen Songbird

5. Kull

First of all he is a prince, that always cool. But what I love about him the most is, that he is a lot more than just good looking. At first glance he looks like he is just hot, but there is intelligence behind all the muscles. I also love how despite everything he does his own thing, no matter what.

Relentless by Karen Lynch

 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚

Author: Karen Lynch

Title: Relentless

Series: Relentless #1

Number of pages: 288

Published: December 2013

Goodreads link: Relentless

Re-read (I re-read at least 5 times, it is just amazing.. 😊)

It is one of my all time favourites, perfect blend of magic, magical creatures, urban fantasy-ish setting and amazing characters.

Why is it so hard to review the books you love the most ?
Anyway... these are thing I love about Relentless:

  • Sara. She is one of the strongest lead characters. She has big heart, is stubborn to a fault and hold her ground against... well everyone. She doesn't let anyone tell her how to live and what to do, her friends are from strangest palaces and her powers are amazing. She is not without her faults either, she makes many mistakes, but she hold herself accountable for them later
  • Nicolas. Warrior. He is really amazing character, strong, powerful, unstoppable and will do anything to protect Sara. Also... he is HOT :)
  • Dynamics between Sara and Nicolas. Both are incredibly strong willed characters and they always seem to clash. Neither will move an inch and that provide some very funny arguments.
  • People. I love the way existence of magical creatures is blended seamlessly in everyday life.
  • Remy, Roland, Peter, Chris. Side Characters are done well too, you have a chance to know them.
  • Nate. He really cares for Sara.
  • Mohiri. Bad ass warriors... enough said.

Only thing I don't love - the cover :)

Happy reading!

Night Shift by B. R. Myers

💚 💚 💚 💚 💚

Author: B.R. Myers

Title: Night Shift

Series: Night Shift Series #1

Number of pages: 326

Published: October 2013

Received from NetGalley

Wow, this book really blew me away. I had a bit of bad luck lately with ARC's from NetGalley, well this one made up for all the bad ones. I was in constant suspense from page one. It definitely wasn't predictable. I was constantly surprised by the turns of the events. And the ending.... it was PERFECT.

It is a story of Daniel Gale , who decided to leave school and travel the world, looking for a lost memory. With parents both gone, he is a bit lost, looking for a home. Last place on his list is Willard's store in New York where he takes job as a Night Guard. On his job interview, the boss asks him if he believes in ghost, and he said no.

On his first night he hears some things and fall into empty elevator shaft, only to be saved by someone who should not be there. It is a beautiful girl, Mary and she tells him she works nights to. Well that turns out it is not entirely true and that is where this start to get reaaaaly interesting.

It is so well written book. Every chapter end on a cliffhanger, you just cannot stop yourself from turning the pages. Also bonus point, I love that one of the female characters is in love with another woman. I love the it was done. Lately authors have been trying to be more divers, but if feels forced most of the time, something that should be natural, looks out of place, and that is just not OK. In this book it is written, just as it supposed to be, natural part of live, adding to the flow of the story, rather than taking away.

I love this book all together. Highly recommend it.

Happy reading!

Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen

💚 💚 💚 💚 💚

Author: Danielle L. Jensen

Title: Stolen Songbird

Series: The Malediction Trilogy #1

Number of pages: 469

Published: April 2014

Goodreads link: Stolen Songbird

This is how the book should be written. It is without a doubt best book I have read this year. It is utterly amazing, so mesmerising and un-put-downable. I mean, it is just perfect. I love the politics, magical system that was utterly unique, romance, because it took time to develop, and Cecil and Tristan of course. They were just amazing characters, flawed- absolutely not perfect, just great enough to make them love you.

  • Cecil. I love the her strength, she didn't rolled over when she was forced to be in the impossible situation, she grew stronger, gained knowledge, that she never dreamed off and fell in love on her own terms.

  • Tristan. Even though I disliked him at first, he grew into one of my favourite male characters. He is scheming, strong with good hearth. And willing to sacrifice everything for his people or Cecil.

  • Side characters. Great because the had time to develop during the curse of the book, you get to know and love them.

  • Politics. I love the way it was portrait, you didn't really know till almost the end what will happen or what is really going on.

  • Trolls. Are we sure they are trolls, aren't they Fae ? :)

One of the best fantasy books I have ever read. It is truly a masterpiece.

I you haven't read it yet... WHAT ARE WAITING FOR ????? :D

Happy reading.

TBR shelf #2

I finally did it !!

I didn't read everything on my TBR shelf :D I just cleaned it up a bit. It is down to 155 books from over 300. More importantly, these are actually book I want to read, not some random books I've just added for reasons unknown.

Now I just have to work on reading them all. :) Hope to get it down to zero within a year...

Well will see how it goes.

Happy reading!

Evolution by Kelly Carrero

 💚 💚 💚

Author: Kelly Carrero
Title: Evolution
Series: Evolution #2
Pages: 146
Published: April 2012
Goodreads link: Evolution

I had to restart it few times. It was a bit far fetched from the get go. Once I was past first few chapters I could not put it down. It is one of those guilty pleasure books (like Selection), where you know, the book is not amazing at all, but you just have to read it anyway.

Story starts when Jade (our main character) saw her scars healing before her eyes in the hospital. Her life changes completely after that. She goes from normal high school girl, with hottest boyfriend, to finding out she is special and that the are a lot people like her, including her boyfriend Aiden.

This is where the main problem with book is. The beginning, or lack of it. The story start where Aiden and Jade have been together for a while, having established relationship. I would love the book a lot more, if started where they meet, grow their bond, seeing that, rather that being told what happened before the book.

There is another thing about their relationship that bothered me. He was always there, even when she was with her friend. I get that her mother was mostly absent and that she was in love, but come on. You can do stuff without him at least something. It was like her whole life revolved around him.

She is special too, she has amazing power, that she is just beginning to explore, and that doesn't come across that much...

One more thing that didn't feel right is her relationship with Chelsea, her best friend. She gets kidnapped and Jade has visions about it beforehand. For the week, or however long she was kidnapped, she doesn't really do much. I mean if it is your best friend, you would do everything in your power...

It is not really bad book. it is really fast paced and written well. Even though at times I wanted to trow my phone at wall, I just had to know what happens next. Most problems lie with plot itself.

If you are looking for something light and fun to read, that will keep you turning page after page, than this is the book for you. :)

Happy reading!

Curse of Stars by Donna Compositor

Author: Donna Compositor

Title: Curse of Stars

Series: Diamond Crier #1

Published: February 2017

Goodreads link: Curse of stars

Provided by NetGalley

This is a story of Sabi. She lives in New York with her parents and sister, seemingly normal life, even though she knows something is not quite right with her family. It is a peaceful life, until she is thorn from everything she knows, by stranger, who claims she is his property.

She was always told not to cry, when she does diamonds come from her eyes.

This ability is the reason she is taken, she is valuable. The world her parents ran from, the world she belongs, is full of magic, that is given to individuals. Well it use to be, bad guy takes it all for himself, except the criers, he can't take that for some reason, so he takes the criers themselves.

She is taken in the captivity. She is used for what she is and what she can do. (A lot of stuff she was forced in, were a bit hard to stomach.)

Sound interesting story right? I though so to, before reading it. It just drags on and not much happen. It is so slow paced, I gave up few times, and then come back. The premise is so amazing and unique. It really could be great book. I have problems with writing styled mostly, I could not connect to the story, fell anything whilst reading it. It was more like counting pebbles.

I wanted to love it, I really tried, it was just not working. Maybe if it was more condensed, I don't know. If I ignore how it was executed, I can appreciate the story line, witch is really interesting.

Maybe just not for me. Someone who likes this kind of writing style, will probably love it.

Happy reading.

Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livinston

Author: Lesley Livingston

Title: Wondrous Strange

Series: Wondrous Strange #1

Number of Pages: 327

Published: January 2009

Goodreads link: Wondrous Strange

I stumbled on this book as part of my 2017 TBR clean up, and I almost pass this book, after I read few less than stellar reviews.

I am so happy I ignore that. (Maybe the deciding vote was the cover ... who knows 😁) Anyhow, this book is just sooooo pretty. I absolutely love fearies, eventhough the stories about it don't come close to Shakespeare's version, I still loved this book. It just such a beautiful story.

Book follows young actress Kelley Winslow, who finally gets a chance at a lead role in a play. She plays queen Tatiana in Midsummer Night's Dream. She meets hot stranger one night, named Sonny (a bit unfortunate name...) and her life is turned upside down, she find out that the play she is playing is not so far from the truth. Ahh, just so pretty.

Favourite parts:

  • Lucky- who doesn't love kelpie that can turn in murderess creature anytime :D
  • Sonny-he is hot guardian, who wants to protect her from all the crap going on
  • Kelley-I love that she is strong on all her own, she stands up for her self and she doesn't need anyone to save her; she takes destiny and make it her own.
  • Fearies
Even though I loved this book I will not read the next one. I saw that there is love triangle, and I am just not the fan of those. They always take away from the story. I will just pretend this is stand alone. 😊

Happy reading.
